Those Red Biking Jerseys
On the bus to school I sometimes watch the bikers out the window. I usually see bikers wearing regular sweaters and pants, some that are exercising wear shorts and really move up the hill. And there are some that go by wearing the same red jerseys with the white arm band that makes me almost think I just saw my brother or father bike by. And then I remember I am in Scotland.
I think I live in a...

End of a Journey
The Bache Bike Trip ended in Lavallette, New Jersey on August 5th. It was an amazing ride. As I retell the stories to my friends here in Asia I am reminded of the important parts: the curiosity and bravery of those first weeks, the tough slog over the Bitterroots and the Rockies, Topher’s injury, corn corn and more corn, family, pushing that last mile, chicken wings, rolling hills of PA,...

Sightings of Species →
I have told some people that along the way I was using an app to keep track of my wildflower sightings. Here is a map of those. You can see I bought the app in Montana, went back to record some of what I saw in Oregon and then got a little tired in PA to continue. It was such fun to look at flowers along the way and keep my mind off some of the pain of cycling.
One rest stop when I was looking...

August 5: Exton, PA to Lavallette, NJ
The morning started out all wrong. Our wake up call came 17 minutes early, there were no cinnamon buns to fuel us, and the route we had printed out the night before actually started at a different location than our hotel. Oh well, it was the last day. We had no better option than to ride to grandma’s.
I packed more quickly that morning and did enjoy the frosted shredded wheat. As we did the...

Last Day
I sit here trying to think of what acronym could capture this whole trip.
The last day was a relief, first and foremost. Seven weeks can seem like a long with just about anybody. It was stressful at times and soreness and lack of sleep did not help either.
Other reflections involved feeling bad that not every single mile was done. But much of this was due to the weather. Also, it takes quite a...

Last Day (Aug 5th): Exton, PA to Lavalette NJ
The last day asked a lot of us. 107 miles to finish off the whole trip. With no reservation for another place to stay combined with the words “I AM DONE” spelled into every action we did, we decided to attempt it.
It started out poorly, directions were difficult and we were making 15 mile stops instead of the usual 10. As we found the trail we needed, the Schuylkill river trail, we...

Visit to Hopewell
Jonathan: I either hadn’t looked at all the cities the trip was stopping in or hadn’t looked carefully enough at the ones in Ohio. But two days before arriving in Burton, I realized it was the Burton I had spent a year near for my Brethren Volunteer Service year. It was a treat to go visit Hopewell after an exhausting day of crazy weather and several bike stores. The farm had changed...

August 5th: Exton, PA to Lavallette, NJ the Final...
From Elizabeth: On the last day there was something like 105 or so miles to bike. And as I have no aspiration to bike a century, and I had not biked the trip from the very first day, I had no inclination to bike this day, especially if everyone else wanted to. However, to coordinate navigating of the bikes and the car it turned out to take two phones with internet and two people in the car. So...

Last Day of the BACHE BIKE TRIP and my century. Pretty happy about this.

July 31: Washington to Confluence, PA
Candlewood Suites in North Washington PA offered us inedible fruit instead of the requisite bananas to start our day.
We loaded up the van with our bikes to shuttle to mile 105 (or thereabouts) on the Great Allegheny Passage Trail. We unloaded the bikes in Cedar Creek State Park at Smithton. A sylvan canopy and cloud cover kept us cool as we rode the crushed stone trail. At Adelaide we jumped...

Just a little taste of the beautiful Great Allegheny Passage. The wooded archway was even more impressive in other spots. I need to find out what those trees are.

Here is some video of the small waterfalls we found along the Great Allegheny Passage. At the bottom of this water there was a small pond with many frogs that hopped away just as I got to them. The majority of water near the path just seeped out of the rock and didn’t make much of a fall this but one was particularly lovely.

August 1st: Confluence, PA to Frostburg, MD to...
Jonathan: Today we started later than usual at the Confluence junction of the Great Allegheny Passage. The late start was due to the breakfast time at the Stepping Stone Bed and Breakfast. Delicious homemade omelettes and bread with homemade jam, what could be better biking fuel? I believe the eggs came from their chickens and the fruit for the jam from the yard. We had veggies from their garden...

cmcastelli asked: So much new Tumblr! Kathryn must have had a free evening. Love the group participation too, even if it may be taskmaster-induced :p So actual question: how does your mood shift, if at all, as you cross the Mississippi and it begins to sink in that you're nearing the end of the trip? Elation? Pride? Contentment? Maybe a tiny bit of nostaligia? Does it get any easier?

Today was a beautiful day on the Great Allegheny Passage. We effortlessly crossed the Eastern Continental Divide, the Mason-Dixon Line and into Maryland. Great day.
